Let’s be real, keeping students engaged can want to try to hold a Zoom meeting with a group of toddlers hyped up on sugar. It’s tough! But engagement is everything. When students tune out, they miss out. Studies even show that students who get suspended are twice as likely to end up unemployed by 24. That’s a big deal.
So, how do we keep them plugged in without resorting to cartwheels in the classroom? (Unless that’s your thing—then by all means, go for it!)
Here are a few simple tricks that work:
Make It Personal: The more students see how a lesson relates to their life, the more they care. Even a quick “How does this connect to your world?” can work wonders.
Get Them Moving: Sitting still for hours? Torture. Break up lectures with movement—think small group discussions, role-playing, or even a quick “stand up if you agree” activity.
Catch Them Doing Something Right: A little praise goes a long way. Even a “Hey, I saw how you helped your classmate just now—nice work” can shift a student’s mindset.
Let Them Lead: Give students a chance to teach, present, or share their own ideas. They’ll take ownership, and you’ll get to see them shine.
I’ve spent years working with students, teachers, and youth advocates, helping to create spaces where real learning (and real fun) happens. If you ever want to shake things up in your classroom, school, or organization, I’d love to bring my energy and message to your students.
But for now—take a deep breath and know that the work you’re doing matters.
Keep making an impact,
